Competition can be a good thing; as every athlete knows, when you compete against a better player, your own performance usually goes up a notch or two.
In the nonprofit sector, however, competition functions a bit differently. Take the example of Thrive Networks. Like most nonprofits, we raise money from donors to benefit a third party – a person, family, or community in a country in Asia or Africa. In an ideal world, we would be engaged in healthy, open competition with other nonprofits to provide better services to those people, and the results, in terms of their satisfaction, would clearly indicate which organization is “winning.” In fact, in this scenario, everyone wins, with one nonprofit helping another “up its game” to the benefit of all.MORE
