Laos

Basic water service remains a problem for the 785 million people in Laos, with 144 million collecting drinking water directly from rivers, lakes, and other surface water sources. While 54% of the country has access to improved sanitation, the same cannot be said for more than half of the rural population who still don’t have access. Untreated sources of water puts families at risk for diseases, and many communities are unfamiliar with lifesaving hygiene practices.

Cambodia

3.8 million people have no access to improved water and 6.8 million people have no access to improved sanitation. Cambodia’s steady progress in meeting water, water, sanitation, and hygiene targets is marred by having the highest rate of open defecation in the region. Human waste near water sources and houses spreads diseases quickly and puts families at risk.

Vietnam

Only 39% of the rural population has access to safe water and sanitation, with many often using unhygienic facilities that contaminate surroundings and water sources. Vietnam has made progress in expanding service coverage, but remote communities have been left behind and the rates of diarrhea, pneumonia, and parasitic infections remain high in these areas.

Toilet facilities are an overlooked factor in students’ performance and attendance. More than 80% of schools have water and sanitation facilities, but many are not fully operational or are poorly maintained.

Adopt a Latrine

A little help for a tiny portion of the home can make a huge difference. The toilet may be a humble part of the home, but it is key to hygiene and health for the family. Clean and working latrines help prevent diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and malaria from spreading, safeguarding the health of whole communities. Unfortunately, toilets are a luxury in many rural and urban areas in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.

Adopt a Compassion Home

Help families weather storms. Compassion Homes are high-quality climate-resilient housing built to withstand the elements of the tropics—storms, floods, and even the scorching heat. These homes also serve as the foundation of their lives. With space for shared meals, rest, and meaningful interactions—families have the room to grow and work toward providing for their other health and sanitation needs.
