TRAINING ON IMPROVING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND COMMUNICATIONS IN FECAL SLUDGE MANAGEMENT IN BEN TRE CITY PROJECT (FSM)

To help households understand how to manage and treat fecal sludge from septic tank properly, change improper habits and connect households with licensed private units, EMWF cooperated with the Ben Tre Women’s Union to organize training series to improve knowledge and skills for Women’s Union members from 14 clusters/communes on February 28-29th, 2022.
These trainings are a part of the “Fecal sludge management in Ben Tre city” project, financed by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through Water for Women Fund and implemented by EMWF.
“The training is really useful, and I gain a lot of project’s knowledge as well as skills to implement the upcoming communication activities, the gifts are adorable”, one participant shared.
Under the framework of these trainings, EMWF coordinated with the People’s Committee of Ben Tre city and treatment plant operator – Ben Tre Urban Joint Stock Company organized 05 tours to the fecal sludge treatment plant.
EMWF believes that this theory and practice combination helps the Women’s Union branches remove the barrier of doubt on the treatment plant and is fully equipped with knowledge in communicating to households about the proper management and treatment of fecal sludge.

About Fecal Sludge Management (FSM) Project:
Phase 1 (July 2017 – June 2020): With the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, EMWF collaborated with the Ben Tre’s provincial government to construct a very first fecal sludge treatment plant with a treatment capacity of 20 m3/day in Phu Hung commune, Ben Tre City.
Phase 2 (June 2020 – September 2022): With financed from Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through Water for Women Fund, EMWF has continued to implement the project in Ben Tre city with 2 main objectives:
- Mobilizing local resources to ensure project sustainability and enhance capacity for local government, Women’s Union and private sector engagement in fecal sludge management in Ben Tre City, Viet Nam.
- Facilitating the development of FSM services on septic tanks to support the government in implementing FSM in towns and cities.

Transitioning from external funding to local government fund management
Under the support of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade through Water for Women Fund, East Meets West Foundation (EMWF) has launched the Community Led, Inclusive, Climate Resilient (CLICR) WASH project in 30 communes across 15 districts and 6 provinces in Cambodia from January 2023 to December 2024. A Stream of Change: Mrs. Pik’s Water Transformation
After collecting water for consumption and domestic use for more than 70 years, today Mrs. Pik, a 75-year-old widow living in Paklay District, Xayyabouly Province, can remove the heavy bamboo pole and water bucket from her shoulders. During a household visitation, she told East Meets West’s field staff.
